I just thought I would share a little fun activity I have been doing with my Year 2's that need Friends of 10 practice.
Back when I started teaching we didn't have those cute double sided counters that we have now.
I used dried cannellini beans and called the activity magic beans.
I bought a packet of dried cannellini beans and painted one side gold and left the other side white. Children would get 10 beans, a ten frame card and a white board to record. Then they would roll the beans over the floor, separate the gold ones form the white ones and then arrange them on their ten frame card to show a friend of 10. So if they had 6 with the gold side facing up and 4 with the white side facing up they would arrange the beans then write on a whiteboard 6 + 4 = 10.
For some reason they just loved it! I have been using the red and yellow counters last week and felt inspired to make some cute ten frames cards that had a bit of colour, just click on the pic below to get your FREE copy!
We had beans at the school I taught prep at - very sneaky! We even did the same thing!

Teaching Maths with Meaning
It must be a Victorian thing Alison! My teaching partner and I were doing it when I was teaching in Melbourne, too funny!
